Capture Cincinnati 2008

The Capture Cincinnati photo book was unveiled Wednesday night at Joseph Beth in Norwood. This is the second year for the Capture Cincinnati project. The 2008 contest attracted 31,247 photos. Close to 15,000 people participated by submitting photos or voting at www.capturecincinnati.com. More than 1.7 million votes were cast.

Two of my photos made the book. I was also one of 25 prize winners, this photo of paddlefest won a Peoples Choice award for the Sports and Recreation Chapter.

My other photo, one of Ray and his tongue, is the Pets chapter cover.

Thanks to everyone for their support and taking the time to vote.

Jeffrey Peter explains his process in creating the grand prize winning photo for Capture Cincinnati 2008. He put the leaf and frog on a piece of glass, then used a flash from above.

Mid Point Music Festival

Mates of State - Definitely a highlight of the weekend, this husband and wife team put on an awesome show at the Southgate House on Saturday night.

This was my fifth MPMF, and although we saw some great bands, I had more fun in years past. The street cars were cool, but I enjoyed it when the venues were all in and around Main St.

The first band we saw on Thursday night was Spectra, at the Blue Wisp. Spectra started with a sweet Stereolab cover.

Oh My God, with an iguana. Also on Thursday night, this Chicago band was very entertaining, often sounding very Flaming Lips-ish.

Then we were off too check out Ruckus Roboticus at Lodge Bar. Good scratch dj from Columbus, OH, mixing some Floyd and Justice "Dance".

Friday night was Kink Ador, at Budakahn. This is a really good band from Nashville, we saw them last year, and came back for more.

Coltrane Motion, seen them many times at Mid Point, very awesome. They were filling in for Go Motion, who had car trouble and couldn't make it, bummer.

So 3 day wristband holders got access to the "secret show" at Know Theatre on Saturday night. This was the secret band? Radio 4. Not really suprising since no one had heard of them. They were good though, and we ended the weekend with Ludlow Skyline.

Prop plane, Dad, and Gothic Church in Cleveland

I accompanied my father to Cleveland last week. We arrived by very small 7 seat prop plane, very cool.
There was this amazing gothic church next to our hotel. Built in 1870. Check out the Justice cross!

Chicago/Lollapalooza

Here's a few photos from Chicago and Lollapalooza, I only had a short(30mm) lens with me so there are very few close up band shots. Don't forget you can click on each image and it will display much larger.

We were walking past the Chicago Theater when some guy came up and say hey "you know that band Radiohead? There they go, right there" It wasn't Radiohead, but it was all their gear, being loaded in or out of the theater.

This is a very cool video fountain in Millenium Park.

The GO! Team

Devlin and Darko at Perry's, Perry Ferrell's DJ stage at Lollapalooza, all decked out with leather sofas and plenty of shade.

Buckingham Fountain...remember Married with Children?

Battles, one of my favorite bands of the weekend.

Look closely at the LCD screens, they're pointing at you.

Festival of Paddles

Saturday was the 7th annual Ohio River Way Paddle fest. It looked like a blast, hundreds of colorful canoes and kayaks floating down the river.

There was actually all kinds of stuff(food, vending, live music) going on at Serpentine Wall, but you wouldn't know it from this photo below. Click the photo and view LARGE.

Atmospheric Electricity

I was driving home last night and the sky was lit up with constant lightning. This was a chance to get my first photo of lightning. I ran inside, grabbed my camera and tripod, and jumped back in the car to find a dark spot with a wide view of the sky. After setting up the tripod and, and adjusting the camera, the storm was on it's way northeast and my chances were fading. I did manage to get one decent photo, out of a hundred or so shots. The thing with lighting is you just have to press the shutter, (long shutter speeds of course) and hope there is lighting when your shutter is open. When you get lucky and they both match up, it's pretty exciting.

Capture Cincinnati is back this year with another photo book created by the people of Cincinnati. I have entered a few photo's this year, you can see and vote for them here.
Thanks to everyone who voted for my photos last year, two were published in the Capture Cincinnati Photo Book. This photo of Music Hall is my most recent submission.

This is a photo of the Freedom Center, I don't think I'll submit it, but I like it.

Fountain Square

I missed it last year, so I was sure to make it down to Fountain Square during the "flowers on the square" display. This is from the observation deck of the Carew Tower.

This photo is also from Carew, facing North.

Rumpke Mountain Boys at Tunes & Blooms

I went to the Cincinnati Zoo on Thursday to see my favorite local Cincinasty Trash Grass band, the Rumpke Mountain Boys. It was a great time, and my buddy Travis(Rumpke Bassist) played his face, as he often does.
